Why in the world would I want to live in Artesia when I could live in Carlsbad or Roswell?
It is really, really close to the academy. Think about the commute. Think about quality of life. Think about no more per diem mileage.
OK, so Artesia has a Super WalMart with food center (booze, too, but try to find a checkout line with a legal age checker! That is probably the same place you will do most of your shopping whether you live in Artesia, Roswell or Carlsbad, and the one in Artesia is fairly new.
It has its own refinery (whoopie doo).
That must be why gas prices are so low.

OK, so it doesn't have all the nice restaurants like Roswell does, but how often do you go out to eat anyway, unless you are a single agent staying at a hotel? Doesn't that kind of negate the idea of saving money while on detail? If you go out once a week, the drive to Roswell for a nice evening out won't kill your budget.
It has a veteran's clinic, and a hospital right by the academy. http://www.artesiageneral.com/
There is probably a lot more that I don't know about. Check with the Artesia Chamber of Commerce.
There are not a bunch of tourists to put up with, hogging all the restaurant tables.
It is easy to get to the Bulldog's
football games and you don't look out of place wearing orange!
